No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.
-Calvin Coolidge
As I poured my coffee and walked out onto my front porch where a flag hangs stoically, I experienced a warm rush of gratitude. My home was built in 1912. Right at the time 116,516 Americans were killed in WWI, followed only a few decades later by WWII, which killed 405,399 of our fellow citizens. That is a lot of lives lost for freedom; I sure wish we would stop taking it for granted.

This week’s read!
This week’s book seems somewhat frivolous to share in a week plagued by such tragedy but none the less, I will share. Maybe it was a good time to be reading something that required no thought and brought pure enjoyment.
‘Salem’s Lot by Stephen King
First let me explain that I stumbled across this First Edition, Illustrated Edition at a gem of a little book store in Austin. It didn’t require me taking out a payday loan so I snapped it up! The book had come in just hours before I did. Our union was meant to be.
This story brought sheer terror to my childhood in movie form and I love it. I like to be scared and there’s nobody better at that than Stephen King. The combination of literary genius and darkness only rare minds are willing to share makes this one of my favorite novels of all time. I read at night, in bed and looked out my historic old windows, waiting for Danny Glick to float up, requesting an invitation into my home. My windows don’t open - I’m safe. I’m so happy this book showed up in my life, as it reminded me of some great works of literature I have lost track of. I think Stephen will be my go to this summer.
I gave it 4 dog ears for readability, worth the time, teaching and emotional connection. Teaching was a stretch (although you will learn how to ward off vampires) but I couldn’t bring myself to give any Stephen King novel 3 dog ears.
EAT Better
In a large bowl add all veggies and the apple. Sprinkle with seeds.
For dressing: combine all ingredients and slowly whisk in the EVOO until slightly thickened. Drizzle over salad at least 1 hour before serving, preferably overnight.
This recipe is so light and just the right combination of sweet and savory for summer! Get more recipes like this in the Colors Not Calories cookbook!
