Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.

My brain is tired. I have a tendency to think away my emotions. When I left The Hope House after an intensive several weeks of trauma based therapy to address my drinking problem, a new found friend and advisor said to me, “remember to let your heart do the work, not just your head.” He gets me. I’m diligently working on this and making progress. This sort of progress is only possible when we really get to know ourselves - that is a life long process. If you think you know yourself fully, you know yourself barely at all.
We are in week two of discovering our temperament and discussing acceptance in my Locals group. I hate the term “self-help” and quite honestly, don’t think it’s helping much. Look around - we have more self proclaimed self-help gurus now more than ever and I’m not so sure people are better off. I don’t consider myself a self-helper (gag) so what the hell am I? I figured it out on today's call…

This week’s learning
So I mentioned my brain is tired - so I didn’t read a book this week. Instead I listened to several great discussions I highly recommend. (listening uses an entirely different process in the brain which means it is NOT comparable to reading) So long as you don’t have Evie Fatz Radio to listen to right now;) I have some other great pieces to share.
I’m not so sure my brain is any less tired after this week’s learning but hey! It was well worth it.
After the recent SCOTUS decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, I was disheartened by the level of nonsensical, and flat out ignorant discussions I was witnessing. It is abundantly clear to me that most women have no factual understanding of their position on this controversial issue. They have chosen a “side” without any real knowledge to support their position (this goes for pro-lifers and pro-choicers.) In a poll asking people if they were interested in hearing my story of carrying a child with a genetic anomaly to term and my subsequent adoption, the outpouring of interest was overwhelming. My husband and I will record a live discussion on this in the coming months. In the meantime, my daughter had a lot of questions about abortion - the actual procedure not the political issue it has become. So we sat down and watched this documentary together. It is not easy to watch which makes it all the more important to do so. After a lot of tears, questions of biology and morality, and what if’s, my daughter was so grateful we spent the time getting a better understanding of the facts. If you have daughters, this is a must. No matter your views on abortion, this is a must. Documentary is available on Amazon Prime as well as other streaming options.

I first learned of Jonathan Pageau when he was a guest on Dr. Jordan Peterson’s podcast several years ago. His perspective on religion is something I cannot get enough of. Catholic turned atheist turned Orthodox Christian, his work as an artist and speaker brings about new understanding of symbolism and the modern world. I’m on my second time through this one - taking notes this time.
What the hell is an offensive comedy special doing amongst the intellectual discussions above? It’s what I love - that’s why it’s here. Not only is Andrew Schulz pure genius but he has taken a bold stand against censorship. This summer, right as he was about to release his newest special with a big streamer, he was told he’d need to edit out some of his offensive jokes. Instead of censoring his work, he bought back the rights to the show. He put his life savings on the line and for that, I pay him huge respect. I don’t watch TV often at all but bought this special and watched it last night and streamed it via Apple TV from my phone to my tv. While it’s not for the faint of heart or overly sensitive, it is comedic genius. Plus, you’re taking a stand against censorship by buying the special. For $15, it’s the least you can do to help fight against talented people (like myself) being told what we can and can’t say. Purchase it here:
