Nobody likes a tyrant. Yet when we consider self-discipline, the common approach is one of coercion. Exhibiting power and force upon ourselves in an effort to “be better” or “do better.” We act as punishers and tyrants to ourselves and then wonder why new habits and better behaviors don’t last.
When I made the decision to get help with my drinking problem, it wasn’t necessarily because I didn’t think I could conquer it on my own - it was because I didn’t want to fight a battle with myself for the rest of my life.
