It's time to clean out your underwear drawer.

Today’s article has a tab bit more of a feel-good vibe for my taste, but I’m rolling with it anyway. Maybe we could all use a little easy reading piece about now. It’s ok to feel happy and it’s about time we reminded ourselves of that.

I bought a new pajama this week (yes, it was the highlight of my week - yes, I have a pretty boring life). I’ve been feeling kind of old and unsexy lately and my black nightshirt with two cats in the roles of Vincent and Jules from Pulp Fiction probably isn’t helping. This shirt does exist - here is proof. I found it at a novelty gift store awhile back and wanted to buy it for my husband. But all they had was a XXL and he’s a medium so I bought it for myself to sleep in instead. It was just too funny to pass up. Whether or not my husband gets tired of seeing me in this oversized men’s shirt with weapons pointed at him is beside the point; I feel frumpy in it. It was time for something new.

So I bought a racer-back tank dress that works just right. I can walk around the house in it in the early mornings while I prep my daughter for school without making anyone blush and I can slip it on in the evenings, slide into bed with my book in hand and feel sexy and smart. The cuddly soft cotton means it clings to my body in all the right places and feels like a baby blanket wrapped around me, lulling me into a fantastically full night’s sleep. The perfect combination of functionality and overtly sexy. I’m feeling better about myself already.

I have a friend of over 20 years who is not only my friend but my muse and has provided me a chapter in my new book which shares the title of this article. We were texting awhile back about something I can’t even recall. It had something to do with the deeper meaning of human existence but she said to me, “is it bad that my daughters have nice underwear from Victoria’s Secret and all of my underwear are from Costco and have holes in them?” I told her I wouldn’t slap a simple label on that as “bad,” but rather it says a lot about where she puts herself in the hierarchy of her family. It speaks volumes about how she values herself. Her kids get what’s best and she gets what’s left over. That’s not good.

But this article isn’t about my new pajama or my friend’s broken down underwear. It’s about the ways in which we care for ourselves. When we’re feeling down or overwhelmed by the current state of affairs in our lives and the world, it’s easy to lose sight of the little things. But the little things aren’t so little and all add up to how we feel about ourselves. When we treat ourselves like we don’t matter, we start to act like we don’t matter. Sloppy sweat pants and old t-shirts are the perfect attire if you want to feel sloppy and old. Quality sleep, good nutrition and exhilarating exercise are only meant for those people who want to feel good, look good and be happy. Pfff…who needs that!

You do. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to feel good about yourself but the only person who can do that is you. It’s your responsibility to make yourself feel good and bring happiness into your life and it starts with the little things. Things as seemingly insignificant as what you wear under your clothes or what you wear to bed. It has nothing to do with what other’s think of you, it’s about what you think about you. Because how you treat yourself doesn’t end with you, it leads to how others treat you as well. If you don’t feel good about yourself, nobody else is going to feel good about you either.

It’s time to do some spring cleaning. It’s time to clean out that underwear drawer. There is going to be a lot of stuff in there that shouldn’t be. Garments that make you feel less than beautiful. People who ride up your ass like a thong you bought that one time when you went on a crash diet and lost 20 lbs. They seemed like such a good idea at the time but they’ve caused you nothing but grief ever since. Those big girl briefs who cover up the real you, like friends that secretly don’t want you to shine because you’ll make them look dull. The torn waste bands and the Swiss cheese nibbled boxers who take tiny bites out of you day after day. Leaving you full of holes. The exposed elastic that snaps you in the ass every time you pull them off and on. Get rid of it all.

Not only did I upgrade my pajama this week but I also upgraded a few other areas of my life. I had coffee with a friend who makes me feel like a brand new pair of perfectly fitting “cheekies” makes me feel. Comfortable and confident. I put an end to mediocre work by an employee who was showing up like a Led Zeppelin night shirt - rubbing eyes and yawning trying to make it through the day. I upgraded my podcast studio in preparation for the new brand and my new book that will launch this fall.

That’s the beauty of cleaning out your drawers. You make room for what makes you feel good. You make room for what makes you happy!
